Upland, California

In response to an invitation by the then pastor, Rev Michael Brown, to staff the newly built elementary school, three Presentation Sisters from the Kerry foundation arrived at St Joseph Parish, Upland, CA in August 1955. Like their foundress, Nano Nagle, the sisters opened their hearts to the families and provided a quality Catholic education to the students of the parish and surrounding areas.

The Presentation Sisters touched not only the lives of the students but those of all the community. Under their leadership, the school became one of the most successful schools in the Diocese of San Bernardino. Students earned top awards at debate, math, spelling and science competitions. Parents committed themselves to St Joseph School because of the nurturing, caring environment built around shared religious beliefs. They loved the Catholic values and the love of learning instilled through the dedicated service of the Sisters and staff. Furthermore, the Presentation Sisters established a vibrant Religious Education program that thrived as school and parish community worked together. Students were prepared to receive the sacraments and grow in the knowledge and love of God and their faith. Also, outreach to the sick and the home bound flourished under the direction of the Presentation Sisters. Visits to the home bound, being present to comfort the sick and their families, and administering the Eucharist to the sick was a great source of joy and blessing.

Today the sisters do not work on the staff. They are more a ministry of prayer and presence. Daily they remember the many intentions and prayer requests from the community inscribed in the journal in the Chapel. Helping prepare students for the weekly liturgy continues. They are involved in the Friends of Nano movement and participate in Stations of the Cross and RCIA.

The spirit of Nano is kept alive and well at St Joseph School and Parish by Mrs Alamo-Ng, the school’s first lay principal, through her example and the programs she instituted. With her dedication and love of Nano, the school continues to be a beacon of light.

Presentation Prayer Center – A Quiet Place of Prayer and Solitude in a Busy City

The Presentation Prayer Center offers a quiet place of prayer and solitude in a growing and busy city.

Through private and directed retreats, access to Spiritual Directors, the Annual Brunch, workshops, book studies, speakers, Taizé prayer, community choir, centering prayer, and other events, we offer a place to develop a relationship with God, self, and others, and to find and connect with the creative energy of the Holy Spirit with a community of fellow spiritual pilgrims.

The Prayer Center also offers space for community groups like Hospice volunteers, campus ministers, and Homeless Outreach workers to meet and hold retreats.

The Prayer Center Board and staff are dedicated to being responsible stewards of the plethora of gifts given us by the many donors, volunteers, and the Presentation Sisters themselves. Part of this responsibility involves hosting events at affordable prices and a commitment to offer our programs to anyone interested, regardless of one’s ability to pay.

Everyone is welcome at the Presentation Prayer Center!

Naomi’s Story

Naomi, 24 came to Presentation Partners in Housing from a shelter in Fargo. She had recently given birth to a baby who was removed from her care, she was overcoming and addiction to Meth, had committed a felony, spent time in jail and was released into homelessness. For Naomi the barriers seemed too many to overcome, homelessness was tightening its grip.
With the help of her Housing Navigator
Naomi now has a place to call home.

HOPE
I was lost and feeling blue walking the streets, what to do.
Homeless, Stranded, All Alone.
Having nothing, no place to call home.
Struggles, Addiction, Feeling Stuck.
Not a bad person, just down on luck.
When you came through with your awesome gift.
You gave me housing taught me to cope.
You made it better, you gave me HOPE.

Cypress, California, USA

The Presentation Sisters were invited to Cypress, CA in 1963 to staff the new school in the St Irenaeus Parish.  The school opened on October 7, 1963 with 275 students.  The constant for the Cypress Presentation Sisters seemed to be a commitment to the unexpected.  Many  Sisters have come and moved in and out to other parishes and places of ministry over the years.

Today, the Presentation Sisters no longer work in the school.  The connections remain in various ways.  The present Principal, Monica Hayden was a student in the school and had been taught by the Sisters.  She ensures that the Sisters are invited for key events in the school and students come over to the convent to express appreciation through cards and gifts.

There is no doubt that Nano’s flame continues to shine.  On 17th March 2019 a statue of Venerable Nano Nagle was blessed and installed on St Irenaeus Church grounds acknowledging the Presentation Sisters.  The plaque reads, “In gratitude for their faithful service, prayers and ministry to our parish and school since 1963”.

The main ministry today is one of prayer, presence, caring for Sisters who need help whether it be accompanying them for doctor appointments or every day needs.  The parish is very dynamic and lots of activities/sessions take place.  The Sisters participate whenever possible in the spiritual events, social issues and entertainment.  They also volunteer at HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday), pro life demonstrations, bridge of light meetings (related to human trafficking) and the shawl ministry (related to the health ministry).  Much time is spent in celebrations of life and being present with families when loved ones enter into new life.

Fundraising is an on-going activity and every year in March there is a “gala”. This takes place at three different parishes in rotation where Sisters have been in ministry.  The parishioners are made aware of the meager salaries the Sisters received and little benefits. The committees that work with the Sisters for each event are remarkable.  We are grateful for the many benefactors and donors.

The Seniors Centre is on the same block as the convent and some of the Sisters avail of the programs and relevant sessions on various topics that  are offered.  There is a wide spectrum of activities most of which are free.

Life in Cypress community is a daily adventure as one never knows what the day will bring.  Sometimes it goes as planned and for sure it is never dull.  We are grateful for having a vibrant parish within walking distance, the school with opportunities for interaction and our Sisters who are located in Southern California.   Having communities nearby enable us to gather as Sisters to celebrate Presentation Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter.  Indeed, we have much to be grateful for each day.
