Poverty to Prosperity: Shared Stories from NGOs Working with Communities

This side event, organised by the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the Unitied Nations, will be within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), partiularly SDGs 1, 2, 3, 5 and 17.

It will highlight NGO efforts to translate the SDGs into local contexts and the lessons learned from engagement with grassroots communities. It will share best practices, collaboration, people’s participation and challenges faced.

Speakers will include Ambassador David Donoghue, Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations, Sr Dorothy Fernandes, International Presentation Association, India, Sr Donatus Mbithe, Congregation of Our Lady of the Good Shepherd, Margaret O’Dwyer, Company of the Daughters of Charity, Sr Elsa Muttathu, International Presentation Association. The moderator for the event will be Cecilia O’Dwyer, Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Loreto Generalate.

Also at this event the resource pack, Critical Hope for the SDGs will be launched. This a practical tool for trainers and communities to engages with the SDGs from a critical, human rights-based, participatory perspective that puts people and planet at the centre of development. It is being used by Presentation Sisters in Africa, Pakistan, India, Philippines and Thailand as a learning tool in their SDG project to bring the SDGs to the local communities. The project is sponsored by Hilton Foundation.
