Protesters Take Action Against Gas and Oil Exploration off Kerry Coast

Back

15/07/2019

On 19 May 2019, Presentation Sisters, Miriam Pollard and Maureen O’Connell joined around thirty protesters at the gates of Kerry Airport (in south west Ireland) where a large banner was unfurled bearing the slogan Keep it in the Ground. Helicopter company, Babcock International intends to use the airport in Farranfore, Co Kerry to service oil and gas exploration operations off the west coast by CNOOC International (a subsidiary of China National Offshore Oil Corporation Limited).

The protest organisers, Dingle Extinction Rebellion Group and Kerry Green Party oppose the exploration work of CNOOC International which has a floating rig in the Atlantic Ocean and holds several licences for oil exploration off the Irish Coast.

In the wake of the Irish Government’s declaration of a Climate Emergency earlier that week, the protesters emphasise that sanctioning such projects goes against that declaration and would be extremely harmful to the environment.

It is claimed that hundreds of jobs would be created in Kerry if gas and oil exploration off the south west coast is successful. However, a spokesperson for the protesters says the exploration will not generate local jobs as Irish people do not have the skillset required for oil drilling and that the project would be extremely harmful to the environment. The group insists that the government should be focussing on wind and wave energy which would generate a higher tax revenue for the country.
