Gifting of the Letters of Nano Nagle

It is with joy that the Congregational Leadership Team wish to inform you that Sr Anne Harte Barry, OSU, Provincial Leader of the Ursuline Sisters of Ireland, Wales and Kenya have decided to gift to the Presentation Sisters seven of the Letters written by Nano Nagle to Ms Eleanor Fitzsimons (in religion, Sr Angela), a member of the first Ursuline Community in Cork which Nano was instrumental in establishing. These letters have been carefully archived at the Ursuline Convent in Blackrock, Cork. A Ritual will be held at the Tomb of Nano Nagle which will include  ‘A Ceremony of Gifting’ on 8 June Feast of the Sacred Heart next to mark this historic occasion.

As a way of honouring Nano’s role in the establishment of the Ursuline Sisters in Ireland and the Presentation Sisters and the close bonds between the two Congregations since the 1770s, the Ursulines have worked in collaboration with our Congregation in preparing for a forthcoming Launch of the Digitization of the Letters of Nano Nagle and a Summer School in Archives 2018. The Summer School has been designated as a Nano Nagle Global Hub event and will take place at Nano Nagle Place on 7-9 June 2018.

This Digital Project is being prepared by Dr Deirdre Raftery and researchers at University College Dublin in collaboration with Sr Rosarie Lordan, Congregational Archivist; Sr Marie Therese King, former Congregational Archivist and current Archivist of the North East Province, Ireland; Sr Anne Coffey, Assistant Archivist of the South West Province, Ireland; Ms Margaret Lantry, Archivist at the Ursuline Sisters archives, Blackrock, Cork and Ms Rachel Foote, Archivist of the Presentation Sisters, San Francisco. The project was sponsored by the Congregational Leadership Team of the Presentation Sisters to mark the Tercentenary of the birth of Nano Nagle.

On behalf of the Congregation, the Congregational Leadership Team extends sincere gratitude and heart-felt appreciation to the Ursuline Sisters, and in particular, to Sr Anne Harte Barry OSU, and the Leadership Team of the Ursuline Sisters in Ireland in anticipation of their most generous gift.
